Whether it’s a spotlight, a floodlight or a portable work area
light, we ask a lot from our lighting equipment. When it’s the middle of the
night in freezing cold temperatures and the power goes out in an entire
neighborhood, the lineman called to get things back online doesn’t have the
luxury of fooling with finicky plugs or replacing bad bulbs in his work
light....Where we once only had a choice of more powerful bulbs and keeping
several of them on hand for spares, we now have lights that can stand up to some
of the worst abuse imaginable and still perform day in and day out without
complaint. Modern technology has given us the compact HID bulb and the LED light
emitter, both of which offer advances and improvements only fifteen years ago
impossible to obtain. Perhaps the most promising and effective of the new
lighting technologies though is the LED. [...]
If you’ve ever seen a flashlight or spotlight in use and
wondered how they got such an intense and powerful light from such a small
package, chances are that what you saw was a quality HID spotlight in
action....With an efficiency of 100 lumens per watt or more, HID lamps far
surpass incandescent lamps for sheer power. Incredible results are obtained,
however, when these HID lamps are paired with an effective reflector
assembly....An added benefit of the HID lamp is that since there is no filament,
the lamp is much more durable and resistant to damage from shocks and vibrations
while lamp longevity is increased up to ten times that of an incandescent. For
applications like those found in the military or law enforcement, this power
combined with high durability for all intents makes the halogen lamp nearly
obsolete for everything but the most basic of duties. [...]
Vehicle mounted spotlights run a whole gamut of options and find
use on almost every type of military vehicle in use from tanks to personnel
carriers. These lamps can be either permanently mounted or capable of semi
permanent placement and are used for crowd control, target illumination, threat
detection and assessment, blockade and checkpoint operations, combat
illumination and just about any other application requiring a fast, powerful and
effective means of illumination....Modern units now benefit from battery
technology like lithium ion battery packs that can provide more power for longer
periods than the standard batteries they replace. Lithium ion battery packs can
also be recharged in the field during daylight hours through several different
means including solar powered battery chargers and vehicle connected charging
units. This eliminates the need to carry a supply of replacement batteries,
which can represent hundreds of additional pounds of supply weight when added up
between all members of a full unit. [...]
Hunting at night is no easy task. Regulations and ordinances can
sometimes be heavily set against anyone wishing to hunt at night. Spotlights and
night vision devices although gaining some leeway as far as nuisance and non
game animals are concerned are still heavily prohibited for use when hunting
many of the more popular game animals. Adding to the problems of regulations are
the simple facts of hunting in the dark. Without a spotlight or some other form
of illumination, ground that during the day is fairly simple to navigate can
become treacherous in the dark of night. There’s more than one hunter who has
literally fallen over a log or slipped down into an unseen gulley in the dark of
night.
